JPMorgan Chase & Co , the biggest U.S. bank by assets, said it suffered a trading loss of at least $ 2 billion from a failed hedging strategy, a disclosure that hit financial stocks and the reputation of the bank and its CEO, Jamie Dimon.
While other gains partially offset the trading loss, the bank estimates the business unit with the portfolio will post a loss of $ 800 million in the current quarter, excluding private equity results and litigation expenses. The bank previously forecast the unit would make a profit of about $ 200 million.

The European market trimmed losses, however, after Greek conservative leader Antonis Samaras said there were still hopes a government could be formed to avoid a repeat poll after Sunday’s inconclusive election.
European heavyweight oil shares also rallied after a report in the Middle East Economic Survey said Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund is in “very advanced talks” to buy a 3 to 5 percent stake in Royal Dutch Shell and is also negotiating a stake in Italy’s ENI .

The Dow and the S&P 500 eked out a modest gain on Thursday, limited by a disappointing outlook from tech bellwether Cisco Systems and caution about Europe.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 19.98 points, or 0.16 percent, to 12,855.04 at the close. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index <.SPX> added 3.41 points, or 0.25 percent, to 1,357.99. But the Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> fell 1.07 points, or 0.04 percent, to close at 2,933.64.

Carrie Harrison-Ell once again sings the praises of Punta Mita, Mexico, a paradise found just 45 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport and particularly heavenly for those traveling with a brood of youngsters. She’s got the inside scoop on the Four Seasons resort there.
I was looking forward to my stay at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, because I’m fond of this part of Mexico and the brand is so well known for providing great service. I’m happy to report, I was not disappointed.
Our arrival was a very special experience. The staff immediately got to know our kids and, giving my son a booklet of bird and iguana species, had them excited about all the animals found on property. As we toured the property by golf cart, the entertaining and knowledgeable guide stopped many times to show the kids various creatures along the way, including pheasants, quail and, his favorite, “Poncho” the iguana.
Four Seasons is just so good at personalization, which I’ve also come to know through time spent at the Four Seasons Lana’i at Manele Bay in Hawaii. When we arrived to our room—complete with our own little pool—the kids’ names were spelled out on the bed in sponges (for the pool!) and written out on cookies. It was a special kick-off to our stay.
The rest helped to affirm that attention to detail and sense of fun. Here are five things that stood out:
1. The infinity pool, infinitely breathtaking The family pool at the Four Seasons is a spectacular infinity pool situated over the beach. Watching my husband and kids, it looked as though they could literally swim over the edge of the pool and into the ocean. It’s a lot to take in in one view, and I can’t stop talking about it!
2. The “catch of the day” The food is amazing. There are four restaurants, all superb, but our favorite was Ketsi, the Mexican restaurant overlooking the ocean. Twice a week, families can watch the fisherman bring in their fresh “catch of the day.” If you’re actually there to see it come in, the staff will ask you to place your orders, so that same catch will be prepared for you later that day. Although we missed the event itself, we indulged in some fresh catch fish tacos, and ceviche, which were both out-of-this-world. The kids also loved sitting in the wooden ship at Ketsi’s entrance.
3. The cool activities for kids The Four Seasons Punta Mita has something I’ve never seen before for kids, a Lazy River. The man-made, donut-shaped pool is in its own private area somewhat hidden by greenery, and has a slow current that takes kids on a little tubing adventure. My kids loved it, and also loved soaking up the sun in the mini-loungers made especially for their pint-sized stature. The resort also has a fantastic kids club—a must for family travelers—but it also has a video game and movie room which is great for school-aged children and teenagers.
4. The wine and cheese boutique, tequila too There are several boutiques at this resort, but the highlight for us was the authentic Mexican wine and cheese boutique. One afternoon, while the kids were having their faces painted at kids club, we wandered over to the boutique to sort through the selection of fine local products. Our timing was impeccable; there was also a tequila tasting event taking place.
5. The complimentary treats The resort was great at surprising us. Though I hate to ruin the surprise for everyone else, I can’t help pointing out just how special the service is here. Our kids went wild the first time they saw the complimentary poolside snow cone cart. It came ready with 12 or so flavors to choose from. There was also a fresh fruit cart earlier that day. Oh, and Mom’s poolside treat was hearing these words: “Excuse me ma’am, may I clean your sunglasses?” Bravo Four Seasons.
Our entire family had a fabulous time. And while it’s clearly great at catering to families, they also take superb care of couples wanting to have their own private and romantic escape. Perhaps next time we’ll leave the wee ones with Grandma and Grandpa for another kind of holiday.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – It will be another battleground for S&P 500 index next week. Will the bears finally give up and let the bulls have their way?
The S&P 500, the market’s broadest measure, managed to close out the week above the psychologically important 1,400 mark for the first time since early April. But the index is still down 0.4 percent for the month so far even after gaining 1.8 percent for the week, with only one trading day left in April.
Brian Lazorishak, senior quantitative analyst and portfolio manager at Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia, said a close above 1,400 is positive, but the recent high, near 1,422, is a more important technical level.
“That’s what we’re looking for on the upside as confirmation there’s room to move higher,” Lazorishak said.
“A close above that would open the window to testing highs back to early 2008. The next natural area you’d see is a run to at least 1,440, the May 2008 high.”
Next week’s release of a slew of economic data on the U.S. labor market and the beginning of the latter half of corporate earnings will be keenly watched to see if they are enough to allow stocks to break above the recent trading range.
The S&P 500, up 11.6 percent for the year, jumped 4.4 percent in January, 4.1 percent in February and 3.1 percent in March, but is down 0.4 percent so far this month.
“The sideways action we have seen over the past few weeks was enough to alleviate any overbought conditions that existed in the market a month ago,” said Larry McMillan, president of options research firm McMillan Analysis Corp in a report on Friday.
“Thus, the market has the potential for another leg higher in this longer term uptrend, one that began early October 2011,” he said.
JOBS, JOBS, JOBS
At the top of investors’ radar screen next week will be the government’s closely watched monthly jobs report for April, to be released on Friday. Jobs growth in March slowed to 120,000, the smallest increase since October, disappointing investors even though the unemployment rate fell to a three-year low of 8.2 percent.
Ahead of the government’s payrolls report, investors will be watching the ADP Employment Report due on Wednesday and weekly jobless claims data due on Thursday for indications of whether the labor market is gaining momentum.
Corporate earnings, which drove gains in stocks last week, will also be in focus.
As of Friday, 57 percent of the S&P 500 companies had reported first-quarter results. Of those 287 in the S&P 500 that had reported earnings, 72.8 percent posted results that topped analysts’ expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data.
Companies due to report earnings next week include Chesapeake Energy and Pfizer Inc on Tuesday; Prudential Financial , Time Warner and Visa Inc on Wednesday; and Kraft Foods and Viacom Inc on Thursday.
Also on agenda next week, Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase & Co , has organized a meeting of major bank chief executives with Federal Reserve Governor Daniel Tarullo, the central bank’s point man on regulation, according to The Wall Street Journal on Friday.
The meeting, slated for Wednesday in New York, is expected to focus on a Fed proposal to limit banks’ exposure to other firms and governments, though other regulatory concerns likely will be discussed.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Asian shares gained on Thursday, retaining positive momentum as the Federal Reserve reassured markets that it will keep its very accommodative stance to support growth, and optimism grew over strong corporate earnings after Apple Inc’s robust results.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Wednesday said U.S. monetary policy was “more or less in the right place” even though the central bank would not hesitate to launch another round of bond purchases if the economy were to weaken.
The Fed also adjusted its economic forecasts to acknowledge an improving labor market and slightly higher inflation over the next few years, suggesting the central bank has grown somewhat less inclined to take more action to help the economic recovery.
The dollar <.DXY> measured against a basket of major currencies fell to a three-week low on Wednesday, boosting the euro to $ 1.3237. The euro stood at $ 1.3230 early on Thursday.
MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.MIAPJ0000PUS> edged up 0.4 percent while Japan’s Nikkei average <.N225> opened up 0.6 percent. <.T>
“The totality of all new Fed communications … have reinforced the idea that the policy bias is currently neutral and that the outlook remains highly dependent on incoming data,” said Societe Generale in a note.
“There were a few vague and seemingly conflicting signals in today’s communications, which probably reflect the difficulty in reconciling the very diverse views within the FOMC,” it said.
Along with the Fed’s assurance that its very easy monetary policy will be kept in place as long as needed, U.S. stocks rallied on Wednesday, with Apple‘s surge giving the Nasdaq its biggest gain of the year and fuelling expectations for better earnings results across the sectors.
About 75 percent of the 200 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported results so far have exceeded expectations.
European shares also rose on strong earnings results.
There was some skepticism that Asia may not see as big a gain as in overnight U.S. and European markets.
“Good news all around, but shares won’t exactly be set alight as some of the momentum from Apple’s earnings surprise was already priced in on Wednesday, and Ben Bernanke’s comments were quite neutral despite leaving the door open to further easing,” said Kim Hak-gyun, an analyst at Daewoo Securities.
In Japan, the corporate picture looks less certain, with Ninetendo <7974.OS> likely to report its first ever operating loss after the close on Thursday as it faces stiff competition from Apple and other smartphone and tablet makers.
Fragile global growth kept the outlook mixed for South Korea, which early on Thursday reported its gross domestic product grew 0.9 percent in the January-March period from 0.3 percent in the previous three months. But the 2.8 percent year-on-year growth in the first-quarter was the slowest in 2 1/2 years, leaving analysts wondering if the economy has hit a bottom or not.
Crude oil futures were softer, with U.S. crude down 0.1 percent at $ 104.01 a barrel early on Thursday. Brent rose 96 cents to settle at $ 119.00 a barrel on Wednesday.
Asian credit markets steadied with the rebound in equities, tightening the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by 2 basis points early on Thursday.
As markets warmed up to risk, German government bond yields rose on Wednesday after a long-term debt auction drew less in bids than the amount on offer, suggesting flows into safe-haven assets may have been exaggerated.

Once authorized, 1Password can then automatically fill in user names and passwords when needed without the user having to know the often complex passwords created for maximum security.
But with Apple continuing to push out developer betas of OS X Mountain Lion and Safari 5.2, it is now becoming apparent that the company is looking to bake similar functionality directly into Safari.
“Passwords” preference pane in Safari 5.2
One of the more visible changes in the Safari 5.2 developer builds has been a new “Passwords” pane in the application’s preferences, offering a way for users to access stored user names and passwords for various sites and services. As currently deployed, the pane is essentially a more convenient way to view passwords already stored and accessible through the dedicated Keychain Access application.
Text string addressing unique password suggestions in Safari 5.2
But text strings associated with the last several builds of Safari 5.2 point to more extensive password functionality for Safari, including an ability to suggest unique passwords rather than simply storing user-created ones. Specifically, one of those strings which is present in Safari 5.2 but not currently used in a public-facing context reads:
Safari can automatically suggest and remember unique, secure passwords for websites you choose.
With Mountain Lion’s focus on taking greater advantage of iCloud services to keep data synced across devices, it seems reasonable to speculate that Apple has plans to roll this password functionality out to iCloud and iOS as well. The move would allow “unique, secure passwords” created on one device to be automatically available for use on another device without having to manually record or insecurely copy and paste password information for transfer.
Apple has already revealed its plans to use iCloud to integrate browser activity across devices, as evidenced by Safari tab syncing making its way into test builds. And interestingly, Apple previously offered keychain syncing across devices with .Mac and MobileMe, but discontinued the feature with the transition to iCloud. It now appears that the functionality was removed while Apple worked to revamp and expand it to increase its functionality.

Apple has also signaled its intention to broaden the browser syncing features of Safari with the iCloud preference pane in System Preferences under Mountain Lion. While the Safari section has been titled “Bookmarks” under Lion, with the addition of browser tab syncing and perhaps new user name and password syncing the section has now simply been retitled “Safari”.
But while Apple certainly seems to have all of the pieces in place for higher security unique password generation and syncing across platforms via iCloud, the feature has not yet been introduced for testing in developer builds of OS X Mountain Lion. The feature has also not been seen in iOS builds, although the company has yet to begin developer testing on either iOS 6 or an interim iOS 5.2 update.
